About Katie
Hello! I’m Katie, an experienced holistic midwife in Cornwall.
I live in the north coast of Cornwall with my husband, two children and dog.
Outside of being a midwife I enjoy surfing, yoga, music and a good chat!
I’m a complete midwifery geek and my awe at witnessing the begining of a baby’s life will never dull (even hundreds of births later!),
I qualified as a midwife in 2015 and have worked in a variety of clinical roles including as a labour ward midwife in two busy specialist referral hospitals, in stand alone birth centres and as a homebirth specialist midwife, leading an NHS home birth team.
I am an NMC registered midwife, just like my NHS colleagues. I attend in depth training regularly through Zest Midwives, Baby Lifeline and in collaboration with local NHS trusts . This ensures that I maintain the highest level clinical skills and remain up to date with developments maternity care
I was convinced of the lasting positive impact of independent midwives after investing in them for my first birth.
Even though I had worked in the absolute best model that the NHS could provide (in the home birth team, offering families appointments in their own homes and sharing shifts of being on call for their births with a team of 6 like-minded colleagues), I hadn’t realised how restrictive NHS care was.
My independent midwife held space for me, nurtured and nourished me in a way that I had never been able to support a new family.
Continuity of care (where you know your midwife personally and build a strong relationship with one another) had always been a passion of mine. As a student midwife I had spent an elective placement with an innovative midwifery group- One to One Midwives in the North West. I wrote an undergraduate dissertation on continuity of midwifery care.
I was so blown away by the amazing effects of knowing your midwife…
A higher chance of straightforward vaginal birth, decreased need for interventions like epidural or forceps births, improved satisfaction, higher breastfeeding rates were just a few of the research findings (Sandall, 2018).
I was accepted onto a competitive postgraduate research development programme at the University of Bournemouth. As a clinical academic, I was able to continue my passion of clinical midwifery part-time whilst designing research into continuity of midwifery care and supporting midwifery students with their learning. You can read my published thesis here (caution, it is a pretty heavy dive into autoethnographic writing!).
I completed training in pregnancy massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and clinical hypnosis for maternity with the leading provider of maternity clinical complementary therapies training- Expectancy, led by the esteemed Dr Denise Tiran. I also completed training with Mark Harris and the Birthing Awareness 3 Step Rewind training to offer support for families to process traumatic experiences such as a difficult birth.
I moved to Cornwall to take up a post as an NIHR Research Champion in Reproductive Health and later had my second baby. This birth called me back to serving families across Cornwall and Devon as an independent private midwife. I continue to undertake research academically and support research delivery on the peninsula.
I began offering independent midwifery services in January 2025. I work with Zest Midwives I enjoy positive working relationships with local NHS maternity services at Treliske (RCHT) and Derriford (UHPT). I love working along side other birth workers such as doulas and have a great network of other professionals such as osteopaths, chiropractors and acupuncturists.
I work in partnership with other independent midwives such as the amazing Mel (South West Indie Midwife) to ensure that you have full cover for your care.
